Gym Thief Caught

A thief who removed a wallet from a West Village man’s locker at the Equinox Gym at 14 Wall Street on July 23 was caught when he returned to the same gym exactly one week later, police said.

Gym staff recognized the thief, Trey Burton, 24, of the Bronx, and called the police. When questioned, Burton admitted that he had taken the wallet containing credit cards and $40 in cash, and police found that he also possessed a forged credit card.

Burton was charged with burglary in the third degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree and petit larceny, a misdemeanor, according to a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office. He pleaded guilty to the petit larceny charge and on July 6 was sentenced to one year in jail, the spokeswoman said.

Copper Theft

A Hudson River Park construction site at North Moore Street and West Street that had been left locked from July 2 to July 6 was stripped of between $15,000 and $20,000 worth of materials and equipment, including 4,500 pounds of copper, some time during the holiday weekend, police said.

The fence and entrance to the site were discovered intact, but the thief cut the locks on two utility trailers containing some of the materials. The site, which is part of the new section of Hudson River Park slated to open this fall, is adjacent to a floating barge, so it is possible that the thief removed the materials by boat, police said.

Wallet Snatcher

A 38-year-old man from Yorktown Heights, NY was withdrawing money from an ATM at midnight July 5 at the Valley National Bank at 170 Hudson St. when a bearded man engaged him in conversation and then grabbed his wallet, police said.

The thief, who police described as a 30-year-old black man standing about 5-foot-7, fled with the wallet and used the cards in it to withdrew a total of $1,750 in cash from six different ATMs on Hudson Street, Canal Street and West Broadway, authorities said.

Drug Shoplifters

Two men entered the Duane Reade at 459 Broadway at Grand Street shortly after 10 a.m. on July 4 and loaded nearly $1,500 worth of over-the-counter drugs into a basket, police said.

The men then dumped the drugs, mostly Mucinex, into a black garbage bag and left the store, police said.

Police described the suspects as black men, one standing 6-foot-2, 170 pounds and wearing beige slacks, white sneakers and a blue T-shirt or tank top. The other suspect is described as 5-foot-8, 150 pounds, wearing black jeans, black sneakers, a multi-colored jacket and a black baseball cap.

ATM Looted

A thief drilled a hole through the combination lock on the Bank Xpress ATM outside of 14 White St. near Sixth Avenue sometime between July 3 and July 7 and removed $6,880 in cash, police said.

A worker who had filled the ATM with $20 bills on July 30 noticed the theft when he checked the machine on July 7.

Gallery Theft

A man and woman entered the Animazing Gallery at 54 Greene St. near Broome Street at 2:30 p.m. on Thurs., July 1 and took a laptop from the owner’s desk, police said.

The man stuffed the $2,000 Mac into his pants and the pair left the store.

Handbag Lifted

A 23-year-old Brooklyn woman was shopping at the American Eagle store at 575 Broadway at Prince Street around 8:30 p.m. on July 3 when she left her Coach handbag on the counter and turned away for about five minutes.

When the woman turned back toward her purse, which held a $200 iPod, a debit card and $40 in cash, she discovered it was gone, police said.

Purse Left

A 16-year-old girl visiting from Istanbul lost her her $800 Marc Jacobs bag after leaving it overnight at the Starbucks at 116 Broadway at Morris Street on July 1.

When she returned for her bag in the morning, she was told that a night worker had left a note saying her bag was in the back room, but the morning crew couldn't find it, police said.

The bag contained a $300 Miu Miu wallet, a $300 Prada wallet, a $500 Sony digital camera and $200 in cash.

Missing Debit Card

A 31-year-old Financial District man discovered that someone used his debit card without his permission to buy two $89 MetroCards after his bank card went missing on July 2, police said.

The man had last used the debit card the night before while having dinner with friends at Cowgirl Seahorse, 259 Front St. near Dover Street, police said.

Wallet Gone

An Upper West Side woman discovered that her wallet containing credit cards and about $120 in cash was missing at 6 p.m. on July 1, while she was at her office at 377 Broadway at White Street.

The woman had last seen her wallet when she purchased a MetroCard that morning at the B/C station at 86th Street and Central Park West, police said.
