MIDTOWN EAST — The grandparents of a three-year-old boy left abandoned at St. Patrick's Cathedral are seeking custody of him, the Associated Press  reported Monday.

Donald and Frieda Fons are expected to ask a Family Court in New York today for custody of their grandson Nathaniel, who police said was left at the cathedral last Tuesday with a note in his hand that had the name of a Florida detective.

Police said the boy was brought to St. Patrick’s by a couple after his mother was arrested on counterfeiting charges.

The Fonses, who live in Land O' Lakes, Florida, said they plan to head to St. Patrick’s to thank the guards who found their grandson after the custody hearing.
