MANHATTAN — The last baby likely to be born at the beleaguered St. Vincent's Hospital came into the world on Thursday.

Abigail Yael Jancu was born at 4:58 a.m. at the Greenwich Village institution that has severed the community for 160 years. Her mother will likely be the last mother to deliver a child there after the hospital stopped admitting patients as of Wednesday.

The birthing ward was empty, except for Jancus, and elevator buttons were taped over to signify that entire floors of the hospital had been vacated, but the couple was determined to give birth at the hospital where their first born had been delivered in 2008, the New York Times reported.

“It kind of reminded me of ‘The Shining,’ Jack Nicholson running around in a hotel by himself,” Abigail's father, Robert Jancu, told the paper. “It’s like tumbleweeds crossing the floor.”

Abigail's mother, Anastasia Jancu, was among the last patients to be admitted as the hospital closed its doors on Wednesday, the Times said. 18 hours later, Abigail was born, and the St. Vincent's birthing ward was dead.

As the family prepared to leave, a hospital staffer handed Robert Jancu a pack of diapers – better give it to them than have it taken by the bankruptcy court, the staffer said, according to the New York Post.
