Manhattan — New York City's unemployment rate went down in March to its lowest rate since November, the State Labor Department reported Thursday.

The unemployment rate is now at 10 percent, down .2 percent from the previous month.

But the good news did not spread to Wall Street, where the securities industry lost 700 jobs.

The construction industry added 2,500 jobs, retail hired 2,000 new people and the food services industry filled 900 spots.

"The unseasonably warm weather in March inspired renewed optimism in New York City as employers added 14,400 jobs this month," said Barbara Byrne Denham, the chief economist for Eastern Consolidated.

There was growth statewide in both educational and health services, as well as the leisure and hospitality sector.
