CHINATOWN — An 85-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital Tuesday after a delivery truck backed into the newsstand where she was working — demolishing it completely.

Two local workers who witnessed the accident immediately ran to the woman’s aid, pulling her out of the wreckage.

“She was shaken, scared,” said one of the rescuers, who would only identify himself by his last name Ho.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. when the truck, which was backing up Grand Street toward Bowery, ran directly into the stand, located on the northeast corner of that intersection.

The 85-year-old woman was rushed to St. Vincint's Hospital in a stable condition, according to police. The officers said they did not know the woman’s identity.

The truck driver was not arrested according to the police because they believed the crash was an accident.

Ho has worked at a food stand on the corner of Grand and Bowery for 15 years and said accidents on the street happen almost daily because of how narrow Grand is between Bowery and Chrystie Street.

Another woman who works on the street blamed the addition of a bike lane along Grand for the accident.

“Ever since the city put in the bike lane two years ago, almost every day a truck or bus will hit a car,” she said.
