UPPER EAST SIDE — Residents angry with a decision turning a baseball park under the Queensboro Bridge into a private tennis club plan to protest at a Parks Department meeting Thursday.
Long-time resident Fred Bondy urged his neighbors to contest the decision allowing The Sutton East Tennis Club to take over the public park, saying the place is a vital part of the community.
"Parents teach their children to play baseball on that field, they teach them to ride their bikes in a safe place away from the streets," Bondy said.
DNAinfo reported on Jan. 8 that the Parks Department had approved the tennis club's application to have it's clay courts set up year-round. The club charges between $110 and $180 for court time.
Community Board Eight's Park Committee meeting will be held at 129 E. 79th Street at 6 p.m. Thursday.
