MANHATTAN — Officials have commandeered $1.1 million in drug money after busting a marijuana ring headquartered in a Little Italy apartment, the Daily News reported Monday.
The apartment at 153 Mulberry had been the ongoing target of an investigation — dubbed “here we go round the Mulberry bush” — which resulted in the arrest last month of tenants Daniel McGehean, 32, and Richard Doyan, 37, the News said.
The two were to be arraigned in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday on charges of illegal money transmitting.
The money, which was found shrink-wrapped, is believed to be the profits from a hydroponic pot operation. Some of it was allegedly headed to California to pay for a cocaine deal and the rest is believed to be headed for Canada, where Doyan is from.
Last month two other men suspected of involvement in the ring, Dehran Duckworth and Richard Burke, were found with five pounds of pot in a duffel bag, the News reported. They were charged with criminal sale and possession.
The apartment is located in the Bonanno crime family’s turf, the News said, and officials are investigating a possible connection.
