MANHATTAN — Democratic strategist Howard Wolfson — the architect behind Secretary of State Hilary Clinton's presidential bid — is joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration, the mayor's press secretary said Tuesday morning.
“Howard played a critical role during the campaign in planning our third term, and I am grateful that I will be able to count on his advice and expertise as we implement that agenda,” Bloomberg said in a statement.
“There are very few people who understand the intersection of policy and communications as well as Howard, and I couldn’t be happier to welcome him to the team.”
Wolfson is technically filling the position vacated two weeks ago by Jim Anderson, the mayor's former director of communications, but the position will be broader than Anderson's was, Press Secretary Stu Loeser said.
Wolfson will act as a "counselor to the mayor," advising him on broad policy issues ranging from gun control to immigration reform, which is shaping up to be a signature issue in Bloomberg's third term.
He will be paid the same as Anderson was.
Wolfson will make a salary of $200,096 — a huge decrease from his campaign salary, which earned him $400,000 alone in bonus money.
