MANHATTAN — The Consumer Product Safety Commission will announce one of the largest crib recalls ever on Tuesday, because of fears models with dropdown sides may trap or strangle babies, CBS News reports.
Some 5 million cribs have been involved in recalls since 2007, according to the CPSC, over the past two years, many of them with dropdown sides.
CPSC Chair Inez Tenenbaum told CBS News the government plans to regulate cribs because the hardware used in the dropdown sides isn't substantial enough to be safe.
The makers and number of cribs involved in the recall were not reported, but many retailers, such as Toys"R"Us, had already stopped selling the cribs after previous recalls.
The CPSC suggests parents find another place for their baby to sleep until the cribs are repaired or replaced.
