MANHATTAN — A serial robber who police say poses as a deliveryman to invade homes in Greenwich Village has struck the second time this week — this time on the Upper West Side.
The thief followed a nanny and the 5-year-old boy she was caring for home to an apartment on W. 81st Street Wednesday, carrying fake packages. He pushed his way into the home and tied up the nanny.
"My nanny had a knife to her throat," the baby's mother told the New York Post, asking that she not be identified. "He took a lot of stuff, most importantly, our laptop and hard drive. We weren't ready for it. I mean, who organizes their life around preventing a burglary?"
"I'm just happy to be putting my baby to bed tonight," she said.
The one-man crime wave began Oct. 8 in the Village when the suspect, described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, jumped a 53-year-old woman from behind as she returned from taking out the garbage, police said.
He tied her up with an electrical cord and made off with cash and electronics, according to police.
The second burglary took place Oct. 16 on Bank Street, and the third was Oct. 25 on the Upper West Side.
This isn't the first time the bandit posed as a deliveryman.
On Oct. 29, he posed as a UPS deliveryman to rob another Greenwich Village nanny caring for a child. And on Nov. 2, he used the ruse to push his way into a W. 12th Street apartment, where he punched a 79-year-old woman in the face and robbed her.
The NYPD has asked anyone with information on the spree to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or log on to www.nypdcrimestoppers.com
