NYPD Announces Cell Phone Driver Crackdown

The NYPD will crack down on drivers using hand-held cell phones in a 24-hour effort beginning Thursday at midnight, the department announced Tuesday.

The NYPD wants to highlight links between distracted driving and car accidents. During the last enforcement period in August, officers handed out 7,432 summonses to drivers. The dailly average is 536.

Each summons carries a fine of $130.
