Over 72 hours, tents that house the homeless have slowly disappeared from beneath Lake Shore Drive.

Tent City residents will be evicted from the viaducts Sept. 18.

Rehab of the Lawrence Avenue and Wilson Avenue viaducts is expected to start in August or September.

Under the new contract, city funds will be matched by the Reva and David Logan Foundation.

Ald. James Cappleman (46th) said the shelter will remain open for "years to come."

The A Day For Change pilot program will give up to 100 panhandlers the opportunity to earn $55 a day.

The Homeless Task Force pilot program aimed to house 75 people in 60 to 90 days.

The closure would force hundreds of men who use the shelter to sleep on the streets.

The announcement came days after Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a task force to combat homelessness.

The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless published a letter online in response to the alderman's remarks.

"We see very little criminal activity in the programs that we fund," a city official said.
