HYDE PARK — BBQ Supply Co. will open Friday in Hyde Park in the former Yusho location.

The 45-seat barbecue restaurant is doing its final test run Wednesday of its menu of pork ribs, pulled pork and Texas-style sausages and brisket in preparation for the opening, owner Jared Leonard announced on Facebook.

The restaurant replaces Yusho at 1301 E. 53rd St., which closed locations across the city starting in July with Hyde Park.

It’s been a startlingly quick turnaround for the location owned by the University of Chicago, with BBQ Supply Co. initially announcing in late August that it wouldn’t open until Nov. 1.

The new restaurant — which has a location in West Ridge originally known as Rub's Backcountry Smokehouse — has kept a lot of the layout of the old Yusho, adapting the kitchen set up for ramen to barbecue with the installation of a large steel smoker.

Yusho fought hard in 2014 to get a liquor ban lifted on the block, and BBQ Supply Co. will continue to the be the beneficiary of that work, offering a menu of 16 bourbons and whiskeys, beer and two cocktails.

The restaurant will be open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. -10 p.m. Friday through Sunday, offering a lunch and dinner menu on all of those days.

It is expected to begin offering a weekend brunch menu next year.
