CHICAGO — A 1-month-old baby was beaten to death in South Shore, officials said.
At 6 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the 6700 block of South East End Avenue after a caller said a baby girl had become unresponsive, police said. The girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Toriella Turpin, 1 month, of the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, was pronounced dead at 6:42 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
An autopsy showed Toriella died of blunt force injuries in her head and assault in a homicide.
An investigation was underway, police said. A spokeswoman for the Department of Children and Family Services said the agency was investigating as well.
