HYDE PARK — The Hyde Park Historical Society is competing to get $2 million in grants to restore its headquarters in a historic cable car station.

The society is one of 25 sites across the country trying to gain online votes to get a $2 million grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express through Main Street America.

The 1893 cable car station, 5529 S. Lake Park Ave., is the only project in Illinois on the list and is up against the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth site in Georgia, historic theater restoration projects in Oklahoma and Ohio and other ideas.

People can vote once a day for their preferred project through Oct. 31 on the campaign website.
