CHICAGO — A man in a ski mask tried to kidnap a 14-year-old girl in Woodlawn on Wednesday, police said.

At 7:07 a.m., the girl was walking to school in the 6400 block of South Minerva Avenue when a man in a black ski mask came up to her form behind, according to a Chicago Police community alert. The girl got away, and the man drove off in a white van.

The man was white, 5-foot-4 and 175 pounds, police said. He wore a black ski mask, black hooded sweatshirt with a zipper, blue jeans and white Sketcher shoes. He drove a white van with no rear windows.

Police advised parents not to let their children walk alone, to call 911 to report suspicious people or cars and to inform neighbors of the attempted kidnapping.

Anyone with information was asked to call police at 312-747-8380.
