BRIDGEPORT — A woman was caught on surveillance footage stealing a tip jar from a frozen yogurt business in Bridgeport that's directly across the street from the neighborhood's police station.

Two people — a woman and a man — walked into Youyo Frozen Yogurt, 3119 S. Halsted St., around 8 p.m. Monday. The man stood by the door while the woman walked up to the counter, looked around the store and grabbed the tip jar before walking out with the man, surveillance footage of the incident shows.

Business owner Catherine Huang was not at the counter. She was in the back of the store. But her 11-year-old son was sitting at a table and watched the theft, Huang said Tuesday. About $10 was in the tip jar, she said.

"It was quick, a few seconds," she said.

Huang called police, who were not far away, as the Deering District headquarters is directly across from the frozen yogurt stand and squad cars are routinely parked on both sides of the street.

That's what shocked Huang about the crime: Not that it was brazen and petty, but that the area is usually saturated with police. In her three years in business, nothing like this has happened before, she said.

"Yes I was" shocked, Huang said. "The Police Department is across the street, right there."

Neighbors believe the woman in the video was also responsible — and charged in — multiple thefts from neighborhood restaurants.
