AUBURN GRESHAM — A woman turned the tables on a robber Saturday morning, wrestling a gun from her 23-year-old attacker and shooting him, police said.

At 6:15 a.m., the woman was walking in the 8000 block of South Ashland Avenue when a man walked up to her and said he was robbing her, police said.

The two struggled, and the woman managed to get the man's gun away from him and shot him in his hand, police said.

The 23-year-old man ran away but was caught by officers responding to the attempted robbery.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was in good condition, police said. The woman was not injured.

"I had to do what God game me the strength to do: Defend myself," the victim, identified as Marnita Carter, 54, told the Tribune.

Carter told the paper that the incident occurred while she was waiting for the bus to take her to her job at a hotel kitchen. The suspect in the attempted robbery, identified as Dennis Evans, tried to shoot her after he was injured, but the gun did not fire, Carter said.

"It was the Lord — that's what it was," Carter said.

Evans is being held without bail, the Tribune said.
