UPTOWN — The $6 million overhaul of the streetscape in the Uptown Entertainment District will begin in August, according to 46th Ward Ald. James Cappleman.
After years of promises, Cappleman announced at this year's State of Uptown luncheon that the Broadway Streetscape plan, which includes new sidewalks, curbs, lighting, trees and the construction of a pedestrian plaza, finally will get underway this year.
The plan has been proposed and deferred every year since 2014, but will begin in the next two weeks, according to a newsletter from the alderman.
Phase one, scheduled to be completed by next summer, includes "full-width resurfacing," new sidewalks, new lighting, new crosswalks, community identifiers and the construction of a pedestrian plaza on Racine Avenue, the newsletter said.
The work will be done on Broadway between Leland and Gunnison streets and on Lawrence Avenue between Broadway and the Lawrence CTA station, the newsletter said.
Phase two is scheduled to begin next spring.
