Zaire Benjamin, 18, Shot Dead And 4 Others Wounded In South Shore

CHICAGO — A shooting in South Shore killed one person and wounded four others on Thursday night, police said.

At 10:38 p.m., the victims were standing on the sidewalk in the 2000 block of East 71st Street when someone in a tan-colored minivan drove by and fired shots, police said.

The victims:

• An 18-year-old man was hit in his head and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.

The man was identified as Zaire Benjamin, of the 6800 block of South Paxton, in Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. Benjamin was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m. and an autopsy showed he died from multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide.

• A 19-year-old man was hit in his abdomen and groin and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition.

• An 18-year-old man was hit in his left wrist and was taken to Trinity Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.

• A 21-year-old man was hit in his left leg and back. He took himself to Jackson Park Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.

• Another 21-year-old man was hit in his buttocks and he took himself to Jackson Park Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.

No one was in custody.
