CHICAGO — Waves could be dangerously high and accompanied by strong currents in Lake Michigan this weekend.
The National Weather Service warned there will be dangerous swimming conditions at city beaches and urged swimmers to "stay out of the water." The waves and "persistent gusty" winds could cause problems for boaters, too, according to the agency.
Waves could reach four to seven feet high Friday and stay around three to six feet Saturday morning before dropping in the afternoon.
Strong currents are possible, too, and people should "heed ... warnings" from officials, said Ricky Castro, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
As of 9:45 a.m., nine beaches had swim bans or swim advisories in effect. Information about the beaches and if they're open is available online.
Otherwise, this weekend should be sunny and warm.
