CHICAGO — Most of the farmers markets that overtake city streets each summer are cobbled together by business groups, neighborhood co-ops or block clubs.

But on Saturday, Resurrection Medical Center, 7447 W. Talcott Ave., is getting in on the trend.

The hospital has invited Midwest Produce to sell fresh fruits, vegetables and baked goods just outside its main entrance from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, in the second of three Community Farmers Markets planned for the summer.

The mini-markets were one of several ideas spawned in a "community visioning" project launched in collaboration with surrounding neighborhood groups last year, hospital spokesman Tim Nelson said.

"We wanted to do something for our local community, to be there for them not just when they need us," said Tim Nelson, a spokesman for the hospital. "And by encouraging healthy eating, we see that as another way to be a source of health."

Even with just a handful of booths, the inaugural market on June 8 drew more neighbors than organizers expected, Nelson said.

Part of the proceeds from sales will go toward the hospital's operations, he said.

The third and final Community Farmers Market this year is planned for Sept. 16.
