CHICAGO — A video shows a man riding a CTA bus ... well, on top of it.
Lloyd-Anthony Peters, of Rogers Park, shot the video Wednesday at the Fullerton station in Lincoln Park. He was heading to visit a friend in Lakeview when a man asked him for a cigarette.
Peters gave the man a cigarette, but when the man asked for a tap of Peters' Ventra card so he could ride the bus, Peters said he couldn't — his leg is broken, he's on crutches and he wouldn't be able to get to the card reader.
They spoke for a few minutes more, and that's when the man made his move.
"He just said, 'F--- it' and literally climbed on top of the bus, lit the cigarette that I gave him and went down the street like a boss," Peters said, laughing.
The man hadn't told Peters he was planning on riding the bus in an, er, unique fashion, and Peters was surprised — but he managed to get a video of the guy. He posted the videos on Facebook and Instagram, where it's been watched more than 40,000 times and shared hundreds of times in less than a day.
"In the city of Chicago, I've seen a lot of strange things ... someone climbing on top of a bus to ride it, that's a first for me," Peters said. "That's definitely a first for me."
The CTA is aware of the incident, according to a statement from the agency, and it's working with Chicago Police to identify the man and pursue charges. The man's behavior is "extremely foolish and dangerous not just to the person involved, but other passengers," according to the CTA.
The man had no problem getting on top of the flat-top bus and was even careful to sit away from the bus' diesel stack, Peters said. And though the man made it look easy, Peters has no plans of doing the same — especially since he's 6-foot-7.
"No. Chance the Rapper got on top of a CTA L and did a music video," Peters said. "I know where I stand my ground and that's on the ground."
