RIVER NORTH — A man described as mentally ill attempted to break into an alderman's car and other vehicles Wednesday at a busy River North intersection, police said.

The man, who was "suffering from mental health issues," was "trying to open car doors and move vehicles" at about 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chicago Avenue and State Street, including an alderman's car, said Officer Christine Calace, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

She declined to disclose which alderman reported the attempted theft or what vehicle the alderman owned.

No vehicles were taken and no injuries were reported, Calace said.

The unidentified man was brought to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment, Calace said. He will not be charged with a crime, she added.
