CHICAGO — A three-year-old girl died from multiple injuries in a homicide in Little Village early Sunday, officials said.

At 1:10 a.m., officers were called to an apartment in the 2500 block of South Homan Avenue for a report of a toddler who was not breathing, police said. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and police said the circumstances of her death were unknown.

An autopsy later showed the girl, identified as Jesipel Aleman, of the same block where she was killed, died from multiple injuries in an assault, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Aleman's death was ruled a homicide. ABC7 said neighbors said they heard arguing in the third-floor apartment.

Neighbor Rodrigo Gudino told WGN-TV that he woke up when he heard police coming to the apartment across the hallway. The little girl's family had lived for roughly three months.

"It's haunting. It happened just opposite of my apartment," Gudino told the station.

Various media reports say that a man is in custody.
