Near North Side Building Evacuated After Loud Noises, Smoking Manhole

CHICAGO — A Near North Side building was evacuated after loud noises were heard there Monday morning.

ComEd sent out a crew on Monday morning to take a look at smoke coming from a manhole in the 800 block of North Franklin Street, a spokeswoman said.

At 10:41 a.m., noises were heard at the location and officials evacuated a nearby building "out of precaution," said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman. No fire was immediately reported.

The nearby Brown Line and the No. 66 bus route were not affected, a CTA spokeswoman said. ComEd said it did not have any reports of outages in the area.
