FULTON MARKET — Sales, gift certificates and free stuff are all part of this weekend's "Discover Fulton Market!" promotion.

Organized by the Fulton Market Association, the promotion for 18 businesses runs Friday-Sunday. The area is bounded by Madison Street, Halsted Street, Hubbard Street and Ogden Avenue in the West Loop.

As the area booms with new corporate neighbors such as the McDonald's headquarters and Google, "neighborhood small businesses are investing storefront by storefront at premium rents,” said Roger Romanelli, Fulton Market Association executive director.

“Our small businesses deserve our support and appreciation, and that’s what ‘Discover Fulton Market!’ is about,” he said in a statement.

Property taxes are climbing as the area develops, "making it more challenging for neighborhood small businesses to compete," the association says, adding that local businesses are also facing "fierce competition from online and big box retailers."

The weekend offerings include discounts or freebies on massage, acupuncture, furniture, home accessories, personal products and services, and Fulton Market-West Loop restaurants, Romanelli said.
