CHICAGO — Breyon Cowans, 24, and Deshawn Johnson, 23, were shot to death early Sunday in Austin, officials said.

At 2:35 a.m., the men were in a car stopped at a light in the first block of South Cicero Avenue when a black Chevy pulled along them and someone in the Chevy fired shots at the men, police said.

One man was hit in his back and right arm and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The other man was hit in his body and taken to Loyola Medical Center in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.

Cowans, of the 4500 block of West Congress Parkway, was pronounced dead at 3:09 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound in his back in a homicide.

Johnson, of suburban Broadview, was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. An autopsy showed he died from multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide.

The two men were "never seen ... without the other," a friend wrote on Facebook.

"You were definitely the life of the part from now to back in 2000's," one woman wrote on Facebook of Cowans. "I love you. Not putting r.i.p. because I still don't believe it."

After the shooting, the attackers turned west onto Madison and hit a man in a wheelchair, giving him non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital.

No one was in custody.
