CHICAGO — An early morning shooting in Brighton Park killed Daniel Cardova, 26, on Sunday, officials said.

At 4:30 a.m., officers responding to a call of a person shot found the man lying between two parked cars in the 2500 block of West 46th Place, police said. The man was unresponsive and had been shot in his chest.

Cardova, of the 4400 block of South Troy Street, was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Hours later, a group of mourners who had come to the spot where Cardova was slain were themselves gunned down. Two people were killed and eight wounded in the gunfire.

A police source said he was a documented gang member.

No one was in custody.
