CHICAGO — A taxi driver was robbed by a passenger in Avondale early Friday, police said.

At 3:20 a.m., the driver and passenger were in the 3500 block of West Melrose Street when the passenger, who was in the back, grabbed the driver from behind and pressed a blunt object against his back, police said.

The passenger demanded the driver's cash and phone and said he would shoot the driver if he didn't cooperate, police said. After the driver gave over his things, the passenger out of the car and ran away.

The driver was not injured and did not see if the passenger had a gun, police said.

The passenger was described as a white man in a black hooded sweatshirt, police said. No one was in custody.
