ANDERSONVILLE — A 123-year-old former Andersonville church has been demolished and is set to become a single-family home with a three-car garage, permits show.
Once the Summerdale Community Church at 1700 W. Farragut Ave., the building was given to The Night Ministry last year after the congregation decided to close its doors, citing a dwindling congregation.
The Night Ministry netted $750,000 by selling the property to developer Ecodwell, who is now the general contractor for the future two-story home.
Proceeds from the sale will go toward The Night Ministry's endowment, rebuilding reserves that were spent during the recession and putting some money away for future capital needs, it said.
The structure was started in 1893, a fact imprinted into the building's foundation along Paulina Street, and finished in 1900.
At its height, the congregation hovered between 100-200 members, according to the Edgewater Historical Society.
Inside, a beautiful wooden ceiling bends across the chapel where residents have married over the years — though its former architectural glory is now far removed.
