LINCOLN SQUARE — Emergency responders swarmed the former Sears store on Lawrence Avenue Wednesday morning for what turned out to be a false alarm, fire officials said.
A call was placed to 911 to report sparks spotted on the roof of the building at 1900 W. Lawrence Ave., according to Larry Langford, spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.
When crews arrived, they discovered the source wasn't a fire but rather welders at work, Langford said.
The Sears store, built in the 1920s, closed in August 2016.
The property is being adapted as a mixed-use development, with 40 apartments and ground-floor retail.
