NORWOOD PARK — Kids can discover the scientific world and adults can rediscover great literature this month, thanks to a packed calendar of free programs and events being offered at the Roden Library.
The library at 6083 N. Northwest Highway will kick off its bimonthly book club at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, when readers will come together to discuss William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet."
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, the library will host a performance of "Fatelessness," described by librarians as a "physical score performed to a radio play." The show was adapted last year by Theatre Y from the Imre Kertesz novel of the same name, which follows a Jewish teenager trying to survive the Holocaust.
The library's Masterpiece Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 9 to discuss Henning Mankell's "The Pyramid," which weaves together five mystery stories centered on a young detective.
Kids between first and fifth grade are invited to join the Junior Explorers Club at 4 p.m. March 15, when they'll use Play-Doh to "teach the basics of electrical circuits in a fun, hands-on way," according to the library.
The book club will return at 6:15 p.m. March 16 to discuss George Meredith's Victorian romance novel "The Egoist."
Visitors of all ages can join the library's Fun & Games activity at 6 p.m. March 23, when they'll get to socialize through coloring, board games and card games. Light refreshments will be served.
Another discussion group will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 28 to chew over Elizabeth Strout's "My Name is Lucy Barton," which "shows how a simple hospital visit becomes a portal" to a mother-daughter relationship, according to an event description.
The Junior Explorers Club will return at 4 p.m. March 29 to build "stomp gliders." Elementary school students will get to design their own paper airplanes, then "use the power of compression to send it soaring through the sky."
