CHICAGO — The Chinese-American Museum of Chicago-Raymond B. & Jean T. Lee Center debuted its newest exhibit Saturday.
"The Way We Wore: Celebrating Chinese Fashion Heritage" exhibit features Chinese clothing, jewelry and accessories from the late Qing Dynasty to the late 20th century.
According to a news release: "Early Chinese immigrants had faced significant challenges of language barrier, discrimination and mockery of how they dressed in traditional attire. Visitors will be able to witness changes in men’s fashion when these immigrants made transitions to the American way of life.
"These sartorial changes happened rather quickly for men, while women made more gradual changes by slowly westernizing traditional Chinese styles, blending the two cultures to create new fashions, characteristic to the extent of exposure of the American culture.
"The stories of key aspects in the Chicago’s Chinatown history will also be highlighted with a sizeable collection of children clothing, women’s attire and day-to-day items. This thoughtfully curated and breath-taking collection will transform visitors’ experience and knowledge of Chicago’s vibrant Chinese community."
