EDGEWATER — After losing more than $35,000 in Chicago Public Schools' recent round of midyear financial cuts, Swift Elementary School is holding a fundraiser at the new Income Tax wine bar to benefit the neighborhood school.
For $20, attendees can enjoy appetizers and a cash bar from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 27 at Income Tax, 5959 North Broadway in Edgewater. All proceeds will go to the school.
Swift Elementary, a top-rated school just around the corner at 5900 N. Winthrop Ave., has seen budget cuts in the past that have forced the school to let go staff. A beloved office clerk got the ax last year.
The event, sponsored by various parent and community-based Swift groups and Ald. Harry Osterman (48th), seeks to raise funds that will help Swift meet basic supply needs and fill in other budgetary gaps.
Swift has also become a crucial resource for immigrant families with school-age children.
At least 65 languages are spoken there and its students come from 50 different countries.
Ten percent of those students are considered refugees, according to organizers.
