CHICAGO — A Minnesota man shot by an Amtrak officer near Union Station last week has died, officials said.

Chad Robertson, 25, of Minneapolis, was pronounced dead at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

An attorney representing Robertson's family has said the man was unarmed when an Amtrak officer shot him Feb. 8. Robertson was traveling to Memphis for a family funeral when his bus stopped for a layover in Chicago.

Robertson went to Union Station to stay warm, family said, but he and a friend were asked to leave so they walked away. Robertson turned back to get a bag he had left behind, and when an Amtrak officer tried to stop Robertson he ran away, an attorney said. At some point the officer shot Robertson in his back.

The bullet lodged in Robertson's spine, his family said after the shooting, and he was facing permanent paralysis.

Robertson's family said they would not leave Chicago until they had justice.

"They are going to jail," Robertson's sister, Nina Robertson, said after the shooting. "Somebody will pay."

Chicago Police were investigating. The Amtrak officer, who has not been identified, was moved to administrative assignments, a spokesman said.
