COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Auburn Gresham man was denied bail Monday on allegations he shot two people in the Gold Coast, including an off-duty Cook County sheriff's deputy.

Clifton Banks, 26, of the 8700 block of South Emerald Avenue, is charged with attempted first-degree murder. A second suspect was released without charges.

According to police, Banks was in the 1200 block of North State Street about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when he got into an argument with someone.

Banks fired a gun — shooting a 39-year-old sheriff's deputy in his head and a 30-year-old man in his left leg, according to an arrest report. Both men were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where their conditions had stabilized.

Police arrested Banks on the scene, court records show, and the attack was caught on surveillance camera.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Monday denied Banks bail.
