ALBANY PARK — With the hashtag #miprimerTweet, the Chicago Police Department announced the launch of a separate Spanish-language Twitter account aimed at bridging the communication gap with Chicago's Latino community.

Based on the handful of tweets the account @ChicagoPD_Vivo has posted in its infancy, the department will use the social media channel to translate its official English-language tweets into Spanish, while also targeting specific messages to a Spanish speaking audience, including efforts to recruit Latino applicants to the police force.

The account is intended "to ensure that our police department reflects the diverse city it serves," according to a statement from the department.

Previous outreach to Latinos has taken place at the police district level: Albany Park and Rogers Park have both held Spanish-language CAPS meetings.
