Will Chicago See The Sun Again? Looks Like Clouds Will Stick Around

By Kelly Bauer | January 12, 2017 12:03pm

DOWNTOWN — These have been dark, dark days, in a literal sense, for Chicago.

It's been foggy, rainy, cloudy and there's even been more snow. But it could still be awhile before Chicago gets any sunshine, said AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines.

"The pattern that we're in certainly isn't conducive for a lot of sunshine," Kines said. "Over the next several days, the prospects aren't overly good."

It's possible, maybe, there could be some sun on Thursday afternoon, Kines said.

"And if there is, I'm sure people will be jumping for joy out there," Kines said, "but I think if we do get some it's going to be short-lived."

What about on Friday, then? That's "not out of the question," Kines said hesitantly, noting that if the sun did manage to come out it'd come "at times" during the afternoon. He gives it a 50-50 shot.

You'll get no break from the overcast weather this weekend, either.

"I suspect there will be a lot of clouds over the weekend," Kines said. It's "not out of the question there could be a period of snow later Friday night or Saturday morning."

The gloomy weather is more of a cloud issue than a rain issue, Kines said.

Chicago's been hit by a Pacific air mass recently, and those "usually contain a lot of cloudiness," he said.

Winds are also coming in off the lake, which usually leads to cloudiness, Kines said.

There shouldn't be too much snow Friday or Saturday, Kines said, but it will be cold. Expect temperatures to stick around the mid-20s on Friday and nearly reach the freezing point Saturday.

Temperatures might be a bit above freezing on Sunday, Kines said.

That's "about where we should be this time of year," Kines said.
