UPTOWN — Uptown has a new quick stop shop for sub sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

Finest Foods & NY Subs opened this week at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Sheridan Road.

"Don't think of it as a convenience store, but a supermarket," said owner Mohammad "John" Abuhashish.

The goods, which include fresh vegetables, quality meats and gluten-free products, will have competitive prices with CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens, he said.

"These are products you can't find within a one mile radius," Abuhashish said.

The store has drawn more customers than expected in its first week, Abuhashish said, leaving some shelves bare mere days after opening. Abuhashish said he hopes to restock in the next few days and will soon be ready to serve sub sandwiches and sell deli meat.

The sandwiches, which will be prepared with Boar's Head meats, will range in price depending on the ingredients, but cost about $6 on average, said Abuhashish, adding he learned how to make the subs in New York.

Abuhashish grew up in Uptown and spent the last few years coaching swimming and water polo at Amundsen High School, 5110 N. Damen Ave. He's listed as the women's swimming and men's water polo coach on the school website.

He also runs PlayBook Hookah Lounge and Tobacco Shop in Glendale Heights, he said.

Finest Foods & NY Subs sits kitty-corner to JJ Peppers and next door to Papa Rays, 4757 N. Sheridan Road. It will be open from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m., Abuhahshish said.
