SOUTH LOOP — President Barack Obama is planning a big event in Chicago next month as he prepares to leave the White House.

Reports in Politico said the Jan. 10 event will be a thank-you to supporters in Chicago who helped launch his career as a state senator, U.S. senator and president. The event also may include a "farewell speech," Politico said.

Chicago officials familiar with the planning of the event confirmed Friday that one of the larger spaces in McCormick Place would be used for an event with the president during the second week of January. They could not provide any more details on Obama’s visit.

Obama ends his term as president and leaves the White House on the morning of Jan. 20.

White House officials were not immediately available to comment.
