ANDERSONVILLE — Bar Roma made good on its promise to open last weekend serving about a hundred locals who braved the cold for the new neighborhood Italian spot.

Bar Roma, 5101 N. Clark St., which specializes in meatballs and Roman cuisine, saw its first customers Saturday night, said Julia Zhu, formerly of Oysy Sushi.

"I was very surprised. We had over 60 people. Last night was cold, but we had about 40 people," Zhu said Monday afternoon. "Most of them were neighbors who've been watching every day. They saw us open and just walked over."

Even though the restaurant doesn't have its liquor license yet, it received "really good feedback" from customers, Zhu said.

It hopes to receive its license any day now, but in the meantime the spot will be BYOB, she said.

The restaurant is open from 5-10 p.m. Sundays-Wednesdays, 5 p.m.-midnight Thursdays and 5 p.m.-1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, according to its website.

A grand opening is planned for January, Zhu said.
