NORTH PARK — Neighbors shouldn't be alarmed if they notice a heavy police presence at Northeastern Illinois University on Sunday.

Officers from NEIU's police department and the Chicago Police Department, among other law enforcement agencies, will be conducting scenario-based training exercises on campus the next two Sundays, according to university officials.

"The training ... will replicate actual incident conditions that might appear real to the casual observer," NEIU spokesman Mike Dizon informed neighbors via Facebook.

"NEIU Police regularly conducts similar training exercises to ensure it is prepared for any type of safety and security threat," he said.

In August, NEIU announced the hiring of John Escalante, former interim superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, as the university's police chief.

The training will repeat on Dec. 18.
