RIVER NORTH — The Archdiocese of Chicago has posted instructions on how to get tickets for Christmas midnight mass at Holy Name Cathedral.

Tickets have been required for the annual event since 1969, the archdiocese said. The ticket guarantees worshippers a space until 11:15 p.m.

After 11:20 unoccupied seats will become general admission so "even if you do not get a ticket come to midnight mass anyway," the posting says.

Music begins at 11:20 p.m. at the cathedral.

To reserve tickets write: Holy Name Cathedral, attn: Michelle Peltier, 430 N. Wabash Ave., Chicago IL 60611. Mark the envelope "MIDNIGHT MASS." Those seeking tickets can also drop off their request.

Those seeking tickets must also include the number of tickets needed and a self-addressed, stamped business size envelope.

The mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Blase Cupich, his first midnight mass since being elevated to cardinal this year.

Last year in his homily Cupich touched on how "the darkness found in the world can challenge our faith, can divide us and paralyze us in fear."

"We know all too well how some even exploit those fears and sow division for their own gain. The shepherds call us to another approach as we deal with the darkness in the world," he said.

"They urge us to believe that we are not left to ourselves in the darkness, abandoned to fend for ourselves, or worse yet that the darkness forces us to be enemies, competitors to overcome. No, the darkness does not have to do that because God is in the darkness with us, for God is Emmanuel," Cupich said.
