Police Trying To Stop West Pullman Shooting Get Shot At, But None Wounded

By Kelly Bauer | October 20, 2016 8:02am | Updated on October 21, 2016 11:39am

CHICAGO — Officers who witnessed a shooting that wounded one man in West Pullman were shot at when they tried to help, police said.

At 2:40 a.m., officers were responding to a call when they heard gunshots in the 11800 block of South Lowe Avenue, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The officers ran to that block and saw people in a car firing shots at a group of people outside.

The officers said they were police and the people inside the car fired shots at them, Amezaga said. One of the officers then took out his weapon and fired shots, but he didn't hit anyone.

The car with the shooters inside drove away, and other officers saw it crash in the 4400 block of West 119th Street, Amezaga said. Three people got out and ran away.

Two of the people from the car were caught, Amezaga said, while a third was still at large. A gun was found, Amezaga said.

No officers were injured, but a 22-year-old man was shot in his leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. His condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," Amezaga said.
