BUCKTOWN — The mother of an 8-year-old girl enrolled in Bucktown's Chicago International Charter School is facing domestic battery charges after allegedly striking her daughter twice during a meeting at the school, police said.

The incident occurred around 5:22 p.m. Monday at the Chicago International Charter School, 2235 N Hamilton Ave., according to Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Trainor said that the 30-year-old mom was in a meeting about her daughter when she allegedly "struck the child in the chest with an open hand, and slapped the child on the knee with a belt."

The girl was taken to Lurie Children's hospital with minor injuries and was expected to be treated and released.

Trainor said that school officials called police and the mother was placed into custody after the incident.

The mother, who lives in the Hermosa neighborhood, has a Nov. 7 court date at Domestic Violence Court, 555 W. Harrison St. She faces misdemeanor domestic battery charges.

A spokeswoman for the Downtown-based Chicago International Charter School, which operates 16 neighborhood schools, including the Bucktown campus, said the school would not reveal any details about the alleged incident.

However, the spokeswoman said, "This incident did not involve any staff members and was a family situation. The school took every precaution to ensure everyone in the school was safe and provided immediate support to the family."
