BUCKTOWN — A 47-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck by a car at Western and Armitage avenues in Bucktown on Thursday, minutes after he shoplifted at a nearby drug store, police said.

The crash occurred at 6:51 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Western Avenue, according to Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Lemmon said that the man "ran into the street after allegedly shoplifting from a local establishment and was struck by a 2014 Toyota Corolla traveling northbound." He was brought to Illinois Masonic in critical condition.

Lemmon said that no tickets were issued and no other injuries were reported.

The Chicago Police Department's Major Accidents unit is investigating the crash.

Police said the man had shoplifted from a nearby Walgreens before fleeing onto North Western Avenue.

Early Friday, an employee at Walgreens, 2001 N. Milwaukee Ave., said police came into the store with items found on the man and spotted him as they reviewed store video surveillance.

"It's sad," said the employee, who declined to give her name. A spokeswoman for Walgreens did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
