ROSCOE VILLAGE — Looking for an excuse to engage in a little retail therapy? Here's one: Do it for the children.

During Thursday's Shop for Schools event in Roscoe Village, businesses along Roscoe Street will donate 20 percent of their sales to area schools.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., customers who make a purchase will be asked which of 17 participating schools they support, and 20 percent of the pre-tax tab will be earmarked for the school of the buyer's choice.

The five schools with the most supporters will receive an additional donation of $3,000; $1,500; $750; $500; or $250 from the Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce.

The participating schools are: Agazziz, Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts, Amundsen, Audubon, Bell, Burley, Coonley, Hamilton, Hawthorne, Jahn, Lane Tech, Lincoln Park, St. Andrew, St. Benedict, St. Clement, St. Josephat and St. Luke.

The participating shops are: A Pied, Cinnamon Boutique, Crush, Denim Lounge, Fixture, Gratitude Heart Garden, Kenneth Ludwig, Kickin', Little Threads, Meringue, Roscoe Books, Roscoe Village Bikes, Victory Training and Village Paperie & Gifts.

Show a shopping receipt with Thursday's date, from any of the participating shops, and receive a grande drink for $2 at the Starbucks at the corner of Roscoe and Seeley.
