WEST LOOP — Firefighters were called to the scene of a fire inside the Oxxford Clothes building in the West Loop Thursday.

At about 10 a.m. Thursday, smoke was reported on the eighth floor of the Oxxford Clothes building at 1220 W. Van Buren St., confirmed Chicago Fire spokesman Larry Langford. Fire crews spent less than 20 minutes on site, he said.

Workers outside the building said the fire could have been started as they were removing an old oil tank used for heating or by old lint trapped in an air vent. They said they put the fire was largely put out with extinguishers before the Fire Department arrived.

No one was hurt in the fire, workers said.

An Oxxford Clothes spokesman was not immediately available to comment Thursday.

The century-old suitmaker specializes in high-priced, hand-made suits. Their suits have been worn by ex-governor Rod Blagojevich, who spent more than $200,000 at the company, actor Clark Gable and other celebrities.

The company hopes to move out of the building by the end of the year, workers confirmed.

Crain's first reported Oxxford's plans to sell the building in April.
