CHICAGO — A man has been charged in the death of a 2-day-old boy, police said.
At 10:45 a.m. Sunday, the man, William Welch, got into an argument in North Lawndale, according to a Chicago Police news release. The man fired shots at a 34-year-old man and shot a 35-year-old pregnant woman in her chest, police said.
The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. She delivered a child via emergency cesarean section, but the baby was later pronounced dead, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. An autopsy showed the baby died in a homicide from complications of extreme prematurity, emergency cesarean section delivery and a gunshot wound to his mother.
Welch, 38, of the 1600 block of South Springfield Avenue, has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, police said. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday.
